Its because of the Earth's orientation in its axis as it rotates.

Yes, the axis is tilted at 23o with respect to the plane of the orbit. In northern hemisphere during winter, this tilt is away from the sun, in summer it is toward the sun, making the sun shine more directly n the northern half of the globe.
