You approach this problem by dividing up 96 into only prime numbers, like this: 96=2*48=2*2*24=2*2*2*12=2*2*2*2*6=2*2*2*2*2*3 and since it's a square root, anything that appears twice can get pulled out. So you have two pairs of two in there, so you could write it like: 96=4*4*6 and then see that 4 can come out front: \[\sqrt{96}=4\sqrt{6}\]
