That is a very broad range. You need to narrow it some more.

A critical essay is a form of evaluation, generally of something written by someone else. But it can cover poetry, books, a speech, and so on and so forth. If all you have to go on is "you need to write a critical essay" then you have to find a topic to do it on first. If they gave you a list of topics, then you need to find something inside the list.

Another thing to realize is that to be critical and to criticize are two different things. When you criticize, you find fault with something. When you are critical about it, you take a deep look at both good and bad points.

Then start with some specific topic that relates to the book that you either understand or like, preferably both. Then look at it critically. Find a few sources of people that support that part of the book and those that attack it, if possible. Then start writing.

Once you have a bit out there, you will know where the paper is going and can revise or make a thesis statement. You can actually start without one if you are not 100% sure where you are going. Once you find the direction, then make the statement and trim off any wanderings outside that statement.

Make visual notes. Doodle out a cheesy cartoon. I did this to remember large sections of Plato’s works for Philosophy. A picture, even a bad one, is more memorable than words. And a better than stick figure cartoon is not hard to make.
