Jeremy shouts in front of a hill. He hears the echo 1.8secs later. The v of sound in air is 300ms-1. What is the distance btw Jeremy and the hill ? Why is the answer 297 instead of 594 ?

OpenStudy (lastdaywork):

I think you simply used - distance = velocity * time Please note that the sound wave made a two way trip.

OpenStudy (mrnood):

It's neither of those velocity = distance/time distance = velocity * time = 300*1.8 The echo has to travel to hill and back again Check your calculations

Owhhh right two ways ! Missed that out. Thanks :)

OpenStudy (lastdaywork):

:)

OpenStudy (mrnood):

but 300*1.8 = 540m SO he is 270 m from hill - not 297m....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, pardon me, it was 330 ms-1 In this case, u're absolutely correct too :) thanks !
