how does mutatin bring about genetic variation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Mutations are unintentional variations in a species. If these variations are passed down to offspring, then a larger number of organisms in that population will have that same trait. This causes genetic variation, as some of the species possess this trait, while others do not.

mutations bring about variation by changing the dna sequence thus creating multiple alleles say of a single gene. At the same time accumulation of mutations in a gene can cause the mutated gene to encode an entirely different protein which confers a new function to the gene different from the original non - mutated gene.
