gene flow due to immigration/emigration are one of the wars that genetic variation occurs. it is genetic variation because during the cross-pollination the sperm and egg cells of the plant will combine and mix DNA resulting in a new type of genetic make-up causing new variation in the species. like for instace one car have blue petals and red thorns, and the other has white petals and green thorns, and this new hybrid could have blue petals and green thorns due to the genetic variation that occured from these wildflowers mixing genetic codes. this is a rough, example though, just fyi.

mutation is also another type of occurence that causes genetic variation. however mutation is a random occurence that happens due to random chance or DNA damage such as from UV radiation. just mixing two plants will not cause mutation, the mutation will occur due to random chance.
