Alright, so what type period is the question referring to? It's ancient, no?
Ancient.
Sorry :/ Not good at this :/
According to the Bible, the Hebrews were descended from Abraham, who was born in Ur, in the south of present-day Iraq. However, most scholars believe that the Hebrews originated much later, as a Canaanite tribe that left the coastal region to settle in the Canaanite hinterland around 1250 BCE. They say one of the pieces of evidence for this is that the Hebrew language is a Western Semitic language, closely associated with the Canaanite language, with no evidence of a south Mesopotamian origin. Also, the archaeological evidence indicates the arrival of modest numbers of new settlers in the hinterland around 1250 BCE, with no real evidence of a major conquest. Considering the various dispersions, intermingling of other languages (e.g. Aramaic), and related events, others concur with the historical perspective. Hebrew is a West Semitic language; and the Hebrews are descendants of earlier Semites. The word "Hebrew" (Jonah 1:9, Genesis 14:13) comes from Eber (Genesis ch. 10 and 11), who was a descendant of Shem and ancestor of Abraham (ibid). Thus, Eber was Semitic, not Canaanite (the Canaanites are from Ham, not Shem). The entire northern region of Mesopotamia, near the confluence of the Balikh and Euphrates rivers, was populated by descendants of Eber, the early Hebrews. Abraham himself was born in Ur, but his ancestors and wider family were in the northern region, as attested by place-names such as Haran (Genesis ch.27) and Nahor (ibid. ch.24), whose sites are still extant.
