solve 5c + 4 = -26.
Isolate C to one side.
@LazyDirectioner Do you know how to do that?
5c + 4 = -26. Subtract both sides 4 to isolate c 5c + 4 = -26. -4 -4 Then divide every term by 5 to isolate c. 5c = -30 /5 /5 C = ??
Typo, do the inverse operation to undo the 5 and have C alone on one side. The inverse of multiplication is division.
@Opcode yes so th new equation would be c+4=-5.2?
No. @LazyDirectioner
Not exactly we want to get C to one side, and the numbers to the other. \[5c + 4 = -26\] When we move anything over the equal sign, we flip it (i.e. + 4 becomes -4). \[5c + 4 = -26 \implies 5c = -26 - 4\]
@Opcode ok so....
Well what does \(-26 - 4\) equal?
@Opcode -30
Correct! So now we have: \[5c = -30\] Do you understand how we got that so far?
@Opcode yes so c=-6
Correct :-).
Do you know how to check your answer?
@Opcode Thanks helped alot
No problem, anyway lets check your answer. It's really easy, and it make sure you get the correct answer.
@Opcode ok ill do it
\[5c + 4 = -26\] We now know that \(c = -6\). To check we want to plug in our new found \(c\) value into the equation. \[5c + 4 = -26 \implies 5(-6) + 4 = -26 \implies -30 + 4 = -26 \] \[-26 = -26~\huge\color{red}{✓}\]
