what is the effect on the speed of a fighter plane chasing another when it opens fire? What happens to the speed of pursued plane when it returns the fire ????
It depends on the caliber of the gun and the rate of fire of the gun. Fire a 25mm at 6,000 rounds per minute and its about the same as slamming on the brakes, just about the same as putting on reverse thrust. You get thrown into the shoulder harness Of course you only fire short bursts, a second or so at most, so it doesn't affect the speed of the your plane much. the effect is equivalent to rate of fire x weight of projectile x muzzle velocity. i can assure you the aircraft would not slow down nor the intercepted plane would fly faster due to the firing. from the kinematic point of view, you can disregard the effect. btw, missiles are recoilless, they have NO effect whatsoever (apart from effect on target, obviously)
