What were the conditions in the South and North during the Great Migration?

The great migration drained off most of the black population of the south. Because of this, the population of african-americans in the north grew.
The great migration helped african-americans obtain jobs and gave them a measure of class mobility. However, because so many people migrated around the same time, african-americans were resented by many urban European-American working class. The South, and its Jim Crow laws caused the African-Americans to move North.
