keep in mind that absolute values are ALWAYS positive
OpenStudy (jdoe0001):
|-a| + |-b| is really the same as a + b once out of the bars
OpenStudy (anonymous):
I keep on getting 14.4 but the answer is -3.6
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Its absolute value so it is 2+ 3.4-9. So 2+3.4 is 5.4, and then subtract 9 from it and get -3.6!
OpenStudy (anonymous):
You put the 9 as being add instead of keeping that minus sign. That's what got you!

once you take out the bars, the value becomes positive
the sign OUTSIDE the bars, remains the same
OpenStudy (anonymous):
but i thought 2 negatives equal a positive?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Yes but that is in certain cases. It was just straight-forward, you didn't need to do that. Besides, usually these on state tests are multiple choice, so you can eliminate the obvious ones and follow the rules you've learned.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
The Absolute Value bars separate it from being positive.

ok thx
