OpenStudy (anonymous):

Which example best describes mechanical advantage? A. A fixed pulley changes the direction that you pull. B. Greasing a surface reduces friction C. A longer lever helps lift more weight.

OpenStudy (fantalux):

i would say A because the actual meaning of that is the ratio of the force produced by a machine to the force applied to it, used in assessing the performance of a machine.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

mechanical advantage trades distance traveled for force applied - which one do you think it is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But A only changes the direction of force, there is no exchange between the distance and force.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ya

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it is not A.

OpenStudy (fantalux):

If its not A then what would it be???? I would say c cuz theres no mention of that in the definition.

OpenStudy (fantalux):

No mention of whats in b i mean...oops.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the definition for mechanical advantage clearly states, that it is based on the "law of the lever"

OpenStudy (fantalux):

Oh so c is correct.
