You write one billion in scientific notation as 10^9. Explain why you write 436 billion as 4.36 x 10^11 rather than 436 x 10^9.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You can only have one number before the decimal so you can't do 436 you have to do 4.36 and that is two more decimal places then one billion so it goes from nine to eleven. Does that make sense?

Yes, thanks!
