Whats a easy way to remember how to add and subtract negatives ?

draw a number line, adding moves to the right, subtracting is the other way (to the left),

taking away a negative , is like changing direction twice, so it is the same as addition (move to the right)

when you add your actually taking numbers away, and vice versa for subtracting, so its a bit of a reverse order. Imaging you have $0, then i steal $6 dollars from you. your at -$6. Then your frind borrows $2. you dont have -$4, instead you have -$8.Then you find $5. so now you move towards the 0 and you have -$3. At the end of the day you have lost $3. Hope this helps
