Proteins stabilise the membrane structure. Channel and carrier proteins are involved in the passage of molecules from the extracellular compartment to inside the cell. Some proteins have receptors, therefore called receptor proteins, involved in cell-to-cell recognition or when some hormone binds to it triggers some kind of cellular response. Hope it helps. =)
