Then it is a big leap to learn to calculate volume when you don't know how to calculate area.  The formula for the area of a triangle is: A=.5bh
A = Area
.5 = 1/2
b = base
h = height.  

The triangle in question is the triangle on the left side of your diagram.
the base is 9 cm
the height is 12 cm
Now calculate the area, then we can calculate the volume.
