Since the people doing the mooc cycle through in waves, I am not sure how much of a response you will get at any given moment.

I am well aware of this. I thought about inviting some participants for interviews or uploading a short survey. But both present several issues. I am trying this way because I thought that the study group members come here for other purposes. Let's see if somebody replies.

Many do.  You could also ask in the Feedback section to get some contrast between the study group users and and the site users as a whole.

To me earning medals here is no different then earning medals in video games, its all about doing a good job.
