The table below shows the square roots of different numbers: Number (x) 4 4 9 9 Square root (y) 2 -2 3 -3 Part A: Does the table represent y as a function of x? Justify your answer. Part B: The total cost f(x), in dollars, for renting a car for a week and driving it x miles is shown below: f(x) = 90 + 0.11x What is the value of f(300), and what does f(300) represent?

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

for the second one: plug in 300 into the equation as x, then solve. f(300) represents the total cost for renting a car for a wekk and driving it 300 miles

I figured that part out

OpenStudy (the_fizicx99):

So you only need help with A?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yea :)

Ok :P

OpenStudy (***[isuru]***):

if y is an function of x then there can be only one value for y for an each value of x.....

OpenStudy (***[isuru]***):

which means that if u consider an instance where x = 5 then there can be only one value for y when x= 5. if there r 2 or more values for y when x = 5 ... then that's not a function of x :)

OpenStudy (the_fizicx99):

I don't think A is a function because 4 square rooted is 2 yes, however 4 square rooted isn't -2. Neither is the sqr of 9,-3. Also, if y was a function of x, then there can only be 1 value of y for every value of x. In other words, because there's more than 1 value for y then it's not a function.

Wow thank you guys so much! Not to take too much of your time but could you help me with 1 more question?

Sam is observing the velocity of a car at different times. After two hours, the velocity of the car is 54 km/h. After four hours, the velocity of the car is 58 km/h. Part A: Write an equation in two variables in the standard form that can be used to describe the velocity of the car at different times. Show your work and define the variables used. Part B: How can you graph the equation obtained in Part A for the first six hours?

OpenStudy (***[isuru]***):

there is a method call vertical line test to c whether that y is function of x... when u plot a graph from an function .. 1 ) if it's a function of x... it could be something like this |dw:1391625494111:dw| then if u draw a vertical on any point along the x axis... it will never cut twice at the same point it's a common feature and u can use it to check any function .. |dw:1391625619597:dw| 2) if it's not a function of x the vertical line u draw will be cut at many point |dw:1391625686596:dw|
