what is an significant digit ?

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

digits that are "useful" when looking at a quantity =)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so my number i need to find the significant digit to is 223.965 so it would be like the 9 and the 6 ?

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

say... lemme show a few... examples.... usually the Zeros are NOT significants if they aren't between other non-zero digits say \(\bf 0.00{\color{red}{ 735}}\qquad \textit{3 significant digits}\\ {\color{red}{ 735}}.00\qquad \textit{3 significant digits}\\ {\color{red}{ 7035}}.0\qquad \textit{4 significant digits}\\ 0.0{\color{red}{ 7305}}\qquad \textit{4 significant digits}\\ {\color{red}{ 1}}00000\qquad \textit{1 significant digits}\\ {\color{red}{ 1001}}000\qquad \textit{4 significant digits}\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh i think i get it thank u so much :)

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

223.965 have no zeros to the right-side or the left-side, and has non-zeros digits all around thus all of them are significant digits, so you have 6 significant digits

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well this is what the question was Find each product or quotient. Use significant digits. 0.405 m × 553 m a. 224 m2 b. 223.97 m2 c. 223.965 m2 d. 223.9m2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk if that helps ?

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

your answer is correct then, since the product has all significant digits, no zeros on the left or right side
