Veronica teaches French in groups of four students. She rents a room for $200 per month. She charges $45 per hour per student. Veronica teaches seven groups of students, and her net earnings per month are $6,100. Part A: If each student learns French for the same number of hours, write an equation that can be used to calculate the number of hours each student learns French in a month. (5 points) Part B: How many hours did each student learn French each month? Show your work and justify each step of your work. (5 points)

So her net earning will be the total she earns from the students minus the rent she pays. Can you write that out?
45x - 200 = 6100
Right. But here x will be the total hours for how many students in a month? So for part A, you will solve for x and find the average number of hours per student.
Could you explain a little more?
\(\bf \square \square \square \square \qquad 1\textit{ group of students}\\ \square \square \square \square \qquad 2\textit{ group of students}\\ \square \square \square \square \qquad 3\textit{ group of students}\\ \square \square \square \square \qquad 4\textit{ group of students}\\ \square \square \square \square \qquad 5\textit{ group of students}\\ \square \square \square \square \qquad 6\textit{ group of students}\\ \square \square \square \square \qquad 7\textit{ group of students}\)
recall, each group is 4 each, she has 7 of those groups
Sure. So the question says that in a month she teaches 7 groups of 4 students for some hours each. The total of those hours for all students multiplied by $45 will be what she receives per month. She has to pay rent of course and that's why you subtract by 200. So here, what did you put as x?
Could you tell me so i can visualize it? Im sorry but i'm kinda stuck :(
I can try. But refer to what Jdoe said; Veronica is getting $45 for every hour she teaches ONE student, right? And she teaches 7 groups of 4 students like in the picture. And each of those students will learn for some hours each. To calculate her net earnings per month, you will multiply the total combined hours for all students for a whole month with $45 and then subtract with $200. What I am trying to say is, x in your equation is that total combines hours for all students in a month. Does that make sense to you?
yes thats whats i originally put though
So for part A I would multiply 45 by 28 then replace x with a number right!
Well, no. You will solve for x which will give you the number of hours for all students per month.
\(\begin{array}{ccccccc} (& 7)(&4)(&45)&x+&200=&6,100\\ &\uparrow &\uparrow &\uparrow &\uparrow &\uparrow &\uparrow \\ &\textit{groups}&\textit{per group}&\textit{ per hour}&hours&rent&\textit{net earnings} \end{array}\)
oh ok so Part A if i plug in 10 for x i can solve which i would get x = 14
@jdoe0001 you've got rent as income, not expense, in that last equation.
ohh heheh... ahemm should be minus hmm true \(\begin{array}{ccccccc} (& 7)(&4)(&45)&x&-200=&6,100\\ &\uparrow &\uparrow &\uparrow &\uparrow &\uparrow &\uparrow \\ &\textit{groups}&\textit{per group}&\textit{ per hour}&hours&rent&\textit{net earnings} \end{array}\)
