I need help on how to come up with a good introduction for my essay.

My topic is to describe a place that is most important to me. I'm still thinking of a good starting point.

I would probably start with something among the lines of…
"New York City is a very important place to me because…" and then list the reasons that you will go more into detail with later in your essay. You could include an emotional reason, a landmark you like in that place, etc.
