Dorian Gray is set in the Victorian period, during the reign of Queen Victoria. You can see this though passing reference of the royal family, as well as the emphasis on Gray maintaining his "proper Victorian image". Opium dens and the like were popular in that time, see Sherlock Holmes for example. Finally, they make reference to the novel A rebours by Huysman, which was published during the Victorian Period.
