The radius of the earth is 3963 mi. The latitude of Durham, North Carolina is 36 degrees North. About how far is Durham from the North Pole?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you'll want to find the circumference of the earth...you know the earth is 360 degrees round...so you have 90 from the equator to the north pole...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Circumference is equal to the radius times 2 times pi

OpenStudy (anonymous):

90 minus 36 gives you the degrees you have left to go 3963 times 2 is 7926 times that by pi and you get 24900 if you divide 24900 by 4 (like 360 divided by 4 = 90) then you'll get the distance of 90 degrees around the earth

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or 6225 miles in 90 degrees to change that to 54 degrees 6225 times 54 divided by 90 and that should be your answer Does that help?

Yes! Thank you so much!
