What happens to gusta when talking about more than one item? does it change to gustan?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It depends on who or what is your subject but here this should DEFinitely HELP ^.^ http://www.spanishdict.com/translate/gustar#conjugation

If what follows is singular (regardless of the defintion of "more than one item", because sometimes you can't see this in the case of abstract nouns) then you use the singular form "gusta". However, when the verb is followed by a plural noun or noun phrase, then you have to change to "gustan". Examples: me gusta el fútbol (el fútbol, singular) me gustan las matemáticas (las matemáticas, plural)
