Lamarck thought that traits acquired during the organism's life could be inherited by its offspring...so the blacksmith's kids should have big arms. Fallacious. I think it was Semelweis who proved this is not so by raising generations of mice with tails cut off during their lives, getting no shorter tails in the offspring..
