what happens to cells in multicellular organisms as they continue to divide and increase in size

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Cells die over time and the process of division replaces them. A process called apoptosis (programmed cell death) causes a cell to die if there are certain indications that there has been DNA damage or other problems. Cancer is a result of the failure of apoptosis to occur (among other things).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, if they keep dividing uncontrollably, then you have cancer and die.
