Which mechanism do sponges possess that makes a predator think twice before attacking it?

Sponges are said to have no true tissues because their cells are non- specialized. This means that they have no true function in the sponges body such as the cells found in humans or animals that serve a purpose.

Generally, if a species can't move, can't hide, doesn't appear to have any other form of defence, and has potential predators but hasn't gone extinct, it's probably poisonous. This applies to plants too: just because a plant isn't poisonous to us doesn't mean it isn't poisonous to a wide range of insects.

They can produce toxins or unpleasant tastes/odors that ward off predators.
