Copenhagen began in the 11th century as a small fishing village. In fact, the name Copenhagen comes from the phrase Køpmannæhafn that means "merchants' harbor." The city stays true to its maritime roots, and much of the architecture stands gloriously on the canals and islands of Eastern Zealand. Visitors can see much of the city’s landmarks by taking a boat tour.
