If Star X appears brighter than Star Y witch can be inferred to be nearer earth? (They are located in the White Dwarf section of an HR Diagram)

White dwarfs are hot but very faint. Therefore, the closer star will most likely be brighter. However, white dwarfs are dying stars, so some may be very dim, almost black, while a star further away may be a little brighter.
