A control allows you to compare one thing to another. 
The controlled variable would be someone without basketball shoes. 

That way, if you ran an experiment, you could see if there was any difference between how high someone jumps with the basketball shoes vs. how high they would jump without the basketball shoes. 

Think of a control as something that is pure. It does not contain any added thing.
