components to find the direction of the resultant displacement!!!!!!!!!!!?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

person drives 3.24km north, then 4.79km west, and then 1.66km south.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

The resultant vector would be in the xy plane and would look like this: <-4.79 km, 3.24 km - 1.66 km>. Could you explain why? How would you "find the direction" of this resultant vector?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because west would be on the left of the origin rightlol find the direction is like tan-1 ?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Simplify the resultant vector components first, please. The resultant vector will be in Quadrant 2. Using this fact, find the angle, as measured from the positive x-axis, and measured in degrees, to the resultant vector in Quadrant 2. If this is confusing, please consider sketching a diagram.
