The film Hoop dreams is about two young boys who want to become NBA players, but as they work toward that goal they meet with struggles and difficulties. Arthur and William do not understand that they cannot just dream about something and accomplish it. They both think that becoming professional basketball players will make them happy, but in the end they realized that there is more to creating happiness in their life, which is to understand how much one has to work, and to understand that their family and friends will love them no matter what they become. William and Arthur both struggle a lot in life before they figure out that they need to work hard to live well in life. In Hoop dreams Arthur always wanted to be a NBA player, but soon he realizes that there is more to life than becoming a pro basketball player, Arthur realizes that to live will he need to not just focus on basketball but also to care about education, so if he does not make it, he has something to fall back on. Arthur struggles to keep his grades up even though he knows that he only keeps playing basketball if he does well in academics. To make matters worse Arthur’s family cannot afford tuition, so Arthur has to stay out of school until his parents pay for the school fee. Arthur’s Coach Bedford say’s that Arthur is hard to coach mainly because he does not like orders and also he wants to play his own way and that leads to Arthur not improving much in basketball. Arthur is struggling is because he does not have the same passion for school as he does for basketball and also does not listen to his coach who is giving him important advice. Arthur’s life seems to get even worse as his team loses and how his summer vacation gets ruined because he has to retake English class. Arthur is not the only one who is struggling; William also has his fair share of problems in life that he needs to solve in order to accomplish his goals. William knows that to live well,he has to do excellent in school and he does do that but later on as he gets injured all the dedication he build up for school was all gone. After the injuries that William receives to his leg, his ACT score also went down to fifteen. William thought if he would play again it might be good for him but his ACT mark is still low but his coach encourages him to keep trying. Later on, William watches Arthur and his team win the city championship and that makes him feel good about how far Arthur has come. Throughout his high school career William learned a lot from his experiences because after he knew that he needs to work harder to live well. When William had his injuries it was as if everything was falling apart for him because basketball was one of his most favorite sports to play. William and Arthur both struggles to accomplish their goals because as they grow older they realize how much work they really have to do to accomplish their goals. William and Arthur both reflect on their future to see what they need to accomplish and what they have learned from the past. Both William and Arthur learned many things in life before they went on to their colleges, especially that they should not just concentrate on one goal in life because no one know if they will make it or not. Arthur and William both have experience’s that they learned a lot from and that made them into better people because it’s true that they failed sometimes but it is important to realize they also learned from it.When people follow their dreams they usually do not work for it or underestimate them and then later when they realize that they are not living well in life, that makes them really depressed because they did not achieve what they wanted in life. Arthur does not feel the importance to do well in his academics even though the coach told him he cannot play basketball if he has low grades. William struggles to keep his ACT scores up, but because of his injuries he starts to losing interest in studying. William and Arthur have learned a lot from their lives that they need to not just concentrate on becoming NBA players because there is more to life than just playing basketball. Living life well is the only way to find happiness in life because then you have nothing to worry about and you love what you do in life.
