When a mercury-in-glass thermometer is plunged in hot water, the thermometer reading at first drops and then rises. Explain why.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well, as heat enters glass it will expand, causing the mercury level to drop quickly in thermometer. But when the heat reaches mercury it will expand faster than the glass. therefore it rises more quickly.
