Find the solution of the square root of the quantity of x plus 3 plus 4 equals 6 and determine if it is an extraneous solution

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

\[\sqrt{x+3}+4 = 6\]?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

answers are: x = 1; not extraneous x = 1; extraneous x = 29; extraneous x = 29; not extraneous

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

Okay, so how do you think you might go about solving this?

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

I'd suggest you start by subtracting 4 from both sides. Then you can square both sides and solve for \(x\). To see if the solution obtained is extraneous, you plug it back into the original equation and make sure that the resulting equation is true. If you end up with something nonsensical, like \(1=2\), it is extraneous.
