I'll ask in comments
The equations below are written in a code such that each digit represents some other digits. Find the exact value of 2014 , given that each of the following is true in ordinary arithmetic. \[8+3=3\]\[9+7=6\]\[77*5=00\]\[5+4=1\]\[6+0=99\]\[3-2=9\]
Hey man, don't get mad but im commenting to get the credits.
8 + 3 = 3 This seems to be telling us that 8 represents the real 0. I think.. Hmm what else..
6 + 0 = a two digit number, hmmmm
6+0=99 Oh oh oh, and the two digit number is 99. They're the same digit! Since two single digit numbers can't add up to 20 or higher it means that they add up to 11. So 9 represents the real 1 digit.
77*5=00 Hmmmm... The only way for this to work out (with the numbers we have left) is by doing: 22*3=66 33*2=66 22*4=88 44*2=88 So 7 and 5 have to be 2 3 or 4. hmmmmmm
@wio help me figure this out XD fun puzzle!
Hmmmm
you have to solve with farts.
oh my :o
Are the operations also switched?
No, operations are true I think.
I think I've got these two values correct. 8 --> `0` 9 --> `1` And I think these are the only options for these numbers... hmm 0 --> `6`, `8` 5 --> `2`, `3`, `4` 7 --> `2`, `3`, `4`
so far 8=0, 9=1
0 = 5?
77*5=00 Since 1 and 0 are already taken, it means 7 and 5 have to be 2 or larger. We can't get 55 (which is what our 00 would be hiding as) without 7 or 5 being a 1, right? :o
7=5?
77*5=00 `55` *5=00 The fake 5 would have to be 2 or larger, this multiplication wouldn't result in a 2 digit answer :( ya i dont think that works. hmm
Well, 5 and 7 are 2, 3, or 4. They both can't be the same digit though. this means they both can't be 3. This means 0 is even.
We know 5*7=0
oo i came up with some numbers :O kinda took a shot in the dark.. lemme see if it worked out.. gotta check the equations again.
3-3=8 so 8=0
0=5
8+3=3 3−2=9 These are the only equations for 3 and 2, which means at some point we will have to guess and check.
6=9
based on what i posted earlier, i narrowed fake 0 down to 6 or 8. I had to do a little guess work. I let it equal 8, and everything unraveled nicely :O i think ive got these values correct. Should i paste them? Or would that ruin the fun?
huh lol giv som hints :P
Well, we should try to do it without any guesses first.
We know 0 is even.
9 is the real 1. You can use that to establish a bunch of nice relationships (numbers that are 1 apart).
6+0=99 6 + even = odd this means that 6 is odd. 9+7=6 odd + 7 = odd This means 7 is even. So 7 is 2 or 4
which also means that 5 is 2 or 4, since 00 is even.
the pieces are falling into place! :D git it wio!!
wait, nevermind that isn't true.
no? :O
if 77 is even, then 5 can still be odd and we'd get 00 = 66
oh true :3
7=3
so we have 7 = 2,4 and 5 = 2,3,4 but we don't have any way to actually solve without guessing at this point, I think.
lets see though...
8=0,0=5,9=1,6=9,7=3 are these ok?
I honestly don't give a rat's buttocks whether your answer is ok if you cant actually justify it.
6 + 0 = 99 --> `9` + `5` = `11` Hmm your numbers don't seem to hold true :(
Lets see... 6+0=99 Since 11 - 8 = 3 and 11 - 6 = 5, that means that 6 is 3 or 5 9+7=6 Since 3-1 = 2 and 5-1 = 4, this means 7 is 2 or 4
That pretty much uses all the info given. I wonder if there are multiple solutions.
mm i hope not.. that would make my guessing approach seem kinda silly. XD
This is what I have reduced it to so far. 0 - 6,8 1 - 5,6,7,8,9 2 - 2,3,4,5,6,7,8 3 - 3,4,5,6,7,8,9 4 - 3,4,5,6,7 5 - 2,3,5 6 - 3,5 7 - 2,4 8 - 0 9 - 1
I agree that 0 - 6,8 I guessed from that point. I let 0=8 and got a solution set. 0=6 ended up with a conflict. Not the most elegant way to solve it I guess... But it worked I think. D:
i wrote 0 = 5 it should be 0 = 2 9 + 2 = 11
0 can't be 2. 77*5 = 00 The only way that's true is if 77*5 --> 11*2 or 22*1. But we've already used our 1.
okay, so we know that 2 and 3 are sequential. That does allow us to make some eliminations.
If 7 is 2 then 6 ix 3, and 5 is 4. If 7 is 4 then 6 is 5, and 5 is 2 or 3. In either case, 2, 3, and 4 are taken. So 2 can't be among them. 0 - 6,8 1 - 5,6,7,8,9 2 - 5,6,7,8 3 - 6,7,8,9 4 - 3,4,5,6,7 5 - 2,3,5 6 - 3,5 7 - 2,4 8 - 0 9 - 1
hmm, not sure why I think 5 is 2,3,5.... where did that come from exactly...
oh, because of multiplication with 77, no wonder...
We know 4 shouldn't be 2,3 or 4 as well. This means 1 can't be lower than 4 and 5's lowest values. 0 - 6,8 1 - 7,8,9 2 - 5,6,7,8 3 - 6,7,8,9 4 - 5,6,7 5 - 2,3,5 6 - 3,5 7 - 2,4 8 - 0 9 - 1
whoops, 0 - 6,8 1 - 7,8,9 2 - 5,6,7,8 3 - 6,7,8,9 4 - 5,6,7 5 - 2,3,4 6 - 3,5 7 - 2,4 8 - 0 9 - 1
It looks like at this point you do have to guess and check.
However, any guess will force a lot of other numbers to be in place. If we pick 7 is 2, then 6 is 3 5 is 4 4 is 5 0 is 8 1 is 9 2 is 6 3 is 7
i oly think of it as leaner system
ill use QSB to solve it lol
If we pick 7 is 4 then 0 - 8 1 - 7,8 2 - 6 3 - 7 4 - 5 5 - 2,3 6 - 5 7 - 4 8 - 0 9 - 1 this leads to a problem because we can't get any digit to be 9. So then by elimination we know 7 is 2.
0 - 8 1 - 9 2 - 6 3 - 7 4 - 5 5 - 4 6 - 3 7 - 2 8 - 0 9 - 1
22*4 =88 7 =2, 5 = 4 , 8=0
So then\[ 8+3=3\\ 9+7=6\\ 77∗5=00\\ 5+4=1\\ 6+0=99\\ 3−2=9 \]becomes\[ 0+7=7\\ 1+2=3\\ 22∗4=88\\ 4+5=9\\ 3+8=11\\ 7−6=1 \]
The contingency tree is so deep that you have to guess and check.
i used QSB to solve it it says its unbounded lol so leanerly cant be solved without guessing :o
