OpenStudy (mathmale):

Hi, Sammy! Are you going to be doing your calculations by hand or by using a calculator? Right off, what are the values of 8^0 and 8^1?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i am doing it by calculator. and they're 0 and 8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or wait.. would it be 8 and 64?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Mind trying 8^0 again? That's \[8^{0}.\]

OpenStudy (mathmale):

What brand calculator have you?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

texas instruments the ti-84 plus

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Type this into your calculator: 8^0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay it's 1 then

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Right. and 8^1 produces what result?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so would i do the same thing with the negative numbers too?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

That's right. and 8^-3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

.0019

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Determine whether 8^-3 and 8^(-3) produce the same result.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

That way, you'll know whether you have to use those parentheses or not.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Now please fill in the table, using the x values {-3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3}. Graph the resulting (x,y).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah they give the same answer. it says round to three decimal places and i got .001953 so would it be rounded to .010?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

You'd do exactly the same thing for the other problem, except that your base would now by 3.29. 3.29^0, 3.29^1, 3.29^-3, and so on. 0.001953, rounded to 3 decimal places, would result in 0.002. That '9' requires that you round up.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh yeah. that's what confused me. okay i got it now. thank you :)

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Note that I'm not actually checking your answers; I just want to make certain you're on the right track. I'm so pleased that you've "got it." You're welcome.
