a jet leaves Reno, Nevada and is headed toward Miami, Florida at a bearing of 100 degrees. The distance between the two cities is approximately 2472 miles. a) how far north and how far west is Reno relative to Miami? b) If the jet is to return directly to Reno from Miami, at what bearing should it travel?

If the scenario is put on a diagram, it will look like a triangle showing Reno and Miami as two vertices and a 90 degree corner on the third. Reno on top, Miami south east of Reno and 90 degree corner left of Miami and south of Reno. Because of the bearing of 100 degrees measured from north at Reno, the triangle's upper angle is 80 degrees. Therefore the length 2472 miles will be the hypotenuse of the triangle, opposite to 80 degrees = horizontal distance (west distance), adjacent to 80 degrees = vertical distance (north distance). Considering the relationships Sin of angle = opposite/hypotenuse & Cos of angle = adjacent/hypotenuse the calculation is as follows: Sin 80 = west distance/2472; therefore, west distance = (2472×sin 80) miles cos 80 = north distance/2472; therefore, north distance = (2472×cos 80) miles
