2x+5y=17 6x-5y=-19

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

What is to be done?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Which variable are you be able to eliminate first?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Since x= and y= , the solution is ?

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

You can eliminate either one if that's what we're supposed to be doing. Are solving the system? Classifying the system? Demonstrating a certain method?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

elimination method

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Okay, do that. What variable shall be eliminated first?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Well, then it doesn't much matter, does it? Flip a coin, or something. Just pick one. x or y?

OpenStudy (j2lie):

The y because -5y and +5y are the opposites and when you add them it equals to 0.

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Oh, so if you add the two equations, the y magically disappears and you are left with: 8x = -2 Very good. Now what?

OpenStudy (j2lie):

you divide -2 by 8x and it will be -2/8.

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Or x = -1/4 Now, go find y.

OpenStudy (j2lie):

how do I do that? I forgot how to.

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

No you didn't. 6x-5y=-19 Substitute the known value for x and solve for y.

OpenStudy (j2lie):

i don't know what to do after you solve for y or x. I'm confused.

OpenStudy (j2lie):

@agent0smith how do solve the elimination problem? I don't know how.

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

Since you already have x, plug it into one of the equations, then you can find y.

OpenStudy (j2lie):

how do I do that?

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

6x-5y=-19 plug in x=-1/4 6(-1/4)-5y=-19

OpenStudy (j2lie):

oh that would -6/24-5y=-19

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

6(-1/4) = -6/4, not -6/24

OpenStudy (j2lie):

you don't multiply the denominator?

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

no, think of it like this \[\Large \frac{ 6 }{ 1 } \times \frac{ -1 }{ 4 }\]

OpenStudy (j2lie):

oh ok.
