person walks 5m west, stops, and walks 4 m northeast. calculate FINAL DISPLACEMENT VECTOR (magnitude and direction). Is it ok to assume that the angle is 45 degrees and solve for the components that way? so A (5m) = (-5,0)m like that?

Yes, that would be fine. Just make sure you state that in your answer, i.e. that the coordinate system you will use is North and East are positive y and x, respectively and angles are measured counter-clockwise from East to North. I realize that may not be entirely necessary, but a particularly inventive answer could say that North-East is positive y and South-East is positive x (or whatever).
