Where did the tradition of not allowing women to own property or run for office come from?

OpenStudy (zale101):

it is hard to know when exactly it started but from my experience of learning history the oldest historical event i've come across of women not owning property is the role of women in ancient Greek, Athens. Women in Athens didn't participate in any political event and didn't have any political rights. And because of that, they didn't have the right of owning property either. They basically did traditional famine activities, like cooking, doing literature, and some other things too. But spartan women were completely the opposite :) Here is an overview of what they did http://www.pbs.org/empires/thegreeks/educational/lesson1.html
