Xavier determined that some fish like to eat worms, some like to eat shrimp, and others don't like to eat worms or shrimp. He calculated the probabilities and created the Venn diagram below:

Attach the Venn Diagram :)

What is the probability that a fish eats worms, given that it eats shrimp?

@SolomonZelman

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Nice pic! What do you mean? can I rephrase the question as What's the probability of fish only eating worms, given what it generally eats?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks! IDK but this is the original question, What is the probability that a fish eats worms, given that it eats shrimp?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@SolomonZelman

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Oh, so we are finding the probability of a fish that eats worms! NOT JUST WORMS, but fish that eat worms and.. is also included.

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

What is that .1 outside the circles?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The 1 represents the fish that don't like to eat either. @SolomonZelman

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Oh, ok. \(\huge\color{red}{ 5 }\) is that the worms do eat. and 3+2+4+1 , or \(\huge\color{red}{ 10 }\) is the entire fish. the probability is \(\huge\color{red}{ \frac{5 }{10} }\) now you just have to REDUCE the fraction.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So 1/2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@SolomonZelman

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

\(\huge\color{magenta}{ YE~S~! }\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thats not in the options 0.2 0.3 0.33 0.67 @SolomonZelman

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Oh, then I missed the correct interpretation. it's the probability that the fish will eat JUST worms and nothing else.

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Oh, then I missed the correct interpretation. it's the probability that the fish will eat JUST worms and nothing else.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so how would we solve it?

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Sorry, got disconnected in the middle of my reply. So fish that eats ONLY worms is \(\huge\color{blue}{ 3 }\) the entire fish is \(\huge\color{blue}{ 10 }\) what would the answer be? you tell me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

0.3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@SolomonZelman

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Yeah, looks like it to me! 3/10 or .3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks!

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

You welcome!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It was incorrect (just took the test) but thanks anyway!
