The sum of two numbers is 95. If the larger number is increased by twice the smaller number, the result is 120. What is the larger number? If x = the smaller number and y = the larger number, then which of the following systems of equations represents the word problem? x + y = 95 and x + 2y = 120 x + y = 95 and 2x + y = 120 x + y = 95 and 2(x + y) = 120

@ybarrap

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think the problem is very easy, it is simply translating english sentence to mathematical sentence/equation. can i help u?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

for u, what is ur choice base on the choices?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the middle one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but thats not how i would write it

OpenStudy (a1234):

It is the second one. They say "twice the smaller number", so 2x is definitely included.

OpenStudy (a1234):

Mertsj, they say that x is the smaller number and y is the larger number.

OpenStudy (mertsj):

ok. x = smaller number y = larger number x+y=95 2x+y=120

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so in other words yes. its the middle one
