Because the presidential election of 1828 is described as being one of the most duplicitous elections in history, I would think the people would react by prioritizing honesty in their candidates. The sun could symbolize light, and therefore truth, expelling any darkness or shadows or lies. Wisdom is usually symbolized with age or glasses, purity is generally white, and hope is typically an anchor or a dove.
