To be considered separate species, two individuals from different species must NOT be able to reproduce together. Why would it be important for the survival of their offspring that a large billed finch (who cracks big nuts) species not reproduce with a small billed finch species (who eats little tiny seeds)

Because unless they could adapt to eating big nuts, their species would die off.
