tone is reflected based off of diction (word choice) and stuff like that in the story they used words like "PRIVATE PROPERTY NO TRESPASSING" "forbidding" ""Get the hell out of the road!"" etc

if just basing off of the title, one might have thought that it would be "Calm" but if you look at the last three paragraphs the whole thing is really negative with mentioning of blood, pain, veins, the "faded and cracked" ball, etc
