if you want simple logic, think of it like this. A B C D
spot 1 spot 2 spot 3 spot 4.
on the first spot, you can put ALL 4 letters there, by swapping each one with A. so that's 4. the second spot, a has already been there so you cant put it there again. the other 3 can be there though! so that's 3. then at the third spot a and be have been counted for there already so only c and d now! and finally, everything has already been at the last spot so 1. 4 *3*2*1
