(second to last ) What is the final price for a pair of $39.50 jeans after 5% sales tax has been added? (1 point) $37.95 $40.95 $41.48 $1.98 (my answer is $1.98 and also i'd like to help other people if you need it i just got one more thing im looking over to make sure im right)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

$1.98 is the amount of tax but the question is asking for final price instead

OpenStudy (yttrium):

39.5 (1.05) = 41.48 (c)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Just add the 1.98 on to the 39.50 :P

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

And why the two methods are the same: 39.50 + .05 * 39.50 factor out the 39.50 39.50(1+.05) 39.50 * 1.05 So both ways will get you to the same solution.

^ yup

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

Quick mental route to the answer: 5% is half of 10%. To get 10%, just shift the decimal point left one spot: 10% of $39.50 is $3.95. Half of $3.95 is $1.98. $1.98+$39.50=$41.48. Note that they put $1.98 on the answer choices to catch the people who don't read the problem carefully enough!
