Might want to ask in Chemistry or Biology, where someone might have covered this in their class.  Computer Science is more about the logical thinking and breaking things down into smaller problems than it is about doing long term studies.  So the topic is skipped.

While the research has not produced a new plastic, it certainly will have shown that the material/techniques used are not effective.  This save later researches from trying those material/techniques, and they can try others.
