Now I know that this probably sounds really stupid, but I've been using Batch files to do random stuff and I want to start doing more advanced programing but i don't know what language I should start out with or how to get the software to start. Any ideas?

What kind of development are you interested? Web or Desktop?

OpenStudy (naga447):

Right now i'm interested in desktop

Now it depends on the platform, if you want an all in one try Python (is a scripting language not like C or C++, but its powerful and portable). If you want something more serious try C or C++, you will need a compiler and maybe an IDE. But rather than learning a language, strive on explore concepts of programming like Structure programming, Object Oriented Programming or System design.

Okay, thanks! and later on if I start trying to get into web development what would you suggest that I start with?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok, for today's world there are two flavors, the way Microsoft's do stuff and the Open Source way. For Microsoft use the .NET ecosystem, is the one is striking the web development very hard, and for the open source learn some PHP and later start using a Framework like Ruby on Rails, Yii, Zend and the like. You will need some background on Database administration as well.
