What is characteristic of a suspenseful setting

So many people are afraid of the dark because the dark is the unknown. In the good scary movies, people don't know what is behind the door or the wall or outside. When you are waiting for results of something, it gets suspenseful because you don't know what is going to happen! So I think a suspenseful setting needs to have something unknown by the characters
